He was worshipped to before going to war (although the Greek preferred to worship Athena, as she represented war strategy), as the Greek believed that they would only win a war if Ares wanted them too. Ares was known for being aggressive and stubborn, and was not well liked by mortals and immortals alike (even so, the mortals still worshipped him). Mars: Mars is the Roman counterpart to Ares. He was also the God of agriculture, unlike Ares, where he protected the farmers' crops, just as he did the soldiers lives. Mars was born from Jupiter, the God of lightning, and Juno, the Goddess of childbirth. Mars is most well known for being the god of War. He is said to be stubborn and argumentative, and short-tempered. Unlike Ares, Mars is the protector of peace, not the blood lust of war. All Romans are considered to be sons/daughters of Mars, because one of his twin sons, Romulus, founded Rome [By that logic, all Romans should be considered sons/daughters of Jupiter and Juno, but nobody ever says that].  Unlike Ares, Mars was respected among mortals, and worshipped a lot more then Ares was among the Greek. Because he wasn't a pleasant person, however, Mars was disliked among the immortals. Mars is often pictured or sculpted with his signature bloody spear and shield
