Venus vs. Aphrodite

Hey guys!

Welcome back to my blog, or, for new viewers, welcome to my blog ;P

I post weekly based off school, home, travel and food.

This week I’ve been studying Ancient Greece and Rome, and the two pantheons of gods at school. I’ve decided to talk about the similarities and differences of two of the major gods (actually they’re goddesses but moving on) that you probably have heard of.

Venus vs. Aphrodite

Venus was the goddess of love, sx, beauty and fertility. Her Greek counterpart was Aphrodite, but Venus had some extra abilities, such as being the goddess of fertility, victory and even prostitution.

She had two main lovers; Vulcan, her husband, and Mars, the god of war. Vulcan once even caught Venus and Mars in bed together with a net. She had many mortal and immortal lovers as well. Vulcan and Venus had a loveless marriage with no children, although she did have many children with other gods and mortal humans. Venus gave birth to Timor, Metus, Concordia and the Cupids. It is known that Venus emerged from the sea in a clam, hence the artwork named Venus painted in the years 1484-86.

On the other hand, Aphrodite, Venus’ counterpart, has two stories on where she came from. The first is simple; she was born as the daughter of Zeus, the second states that she emerged from foam generated when the Titan Cronus slew his father and threw his genitals into the sea.
Since Aphrodite was the goddess of love and beauty, many gods and humans fell at the sight of her. Zeus prevented a war between the gods by marrying Aphrodite to Hephaestus, as his deformity and ugliness wouldn't cause problems by being a threat. Despite this marriage, she had many other lovers, and her marriage to Hephaestus wasn’t one based on love (ironically).

As you know, Venus is also a planet, specifically the second planet away from the sun. The reason why Venus is called -well- Venus is that the planet is one of the most bright celestial objects in the night sky, and the ancient Romans chose to name the brightest after their goddess of love and beauty, Venus.

Hope you guys enjoyed this week blog post! Join me next week to read a post on either the fast food industry and the food and waste hazards associated with it or how to get over a break up for single people!
